Island is located on the northern end of the Strait of Georgia and provides
a gateway to boating the enchanting Desolation Sound. A well-equipped marina
is located in Gorge Harbour and there are government wharfs at Cortez Bay,
Whaletown, Manson's Landing, and Squirrel Cove. Cortez Island is about 25
km long, 13 km wide. This rugged island is in East Vancouver Island's rain
shadow and has a drier climate than mainland British Columbia. Arbutus,
manzanita, juniper, conifers and deciduous trees provide lush vegetation
on the island. The island has approximately 1000 permanent residents most
of which live on the south part of the island. Cortez Island is a great
place to pick blackberries, salal, huckleberries, salmonberries and thimbleberries.
Cortez Island has several lagoons with abundant shellfish and shorebirds.
Manson's Landing Provincial Park is the most accessible and shellfish may
be legally collected there and at Smelt Bay, Squirrel Cove and the beach
south of the government wharf in Gorge Harbor and you must be in possession
of a valid fishing license.
On Cortez Island you can hike, bike, camp, beach comb, kayak, scuba dive, sail or fish. Try hiking or biking on old logging road which may take you into seldom visited areas such as Carrington Bay and Von Donop Inlet. Visit Gunflint and Hague Lakes which are surrounded parkkland and marked trails at the end of Quais Bay Road and across the road from the Cortez Island Motel. Many of the small roads lead to private property, so pick your destinations carefully and respect private property. Camp at Smelt Bay Provincial Park where you can swim, rest or beachcomb along the sandy beaches. Manson's Landing Provincial Park boast Manson's Lagoon and a nice sandy beach on Hague Lake. There is no camping at Manson's Landing and pets and powerboats are not permitted in the Park. There is good fishing around Cortez year round. An excellent beach walk begins at the tip of Smelt Bay Park where you can walk to the tip of Sutil Point. Along the way watch the life fly and swim by. Eagles, gulls, cormorants, heron and many other birds can been commonly seen. Sea lions, seals, otters and sometime whales can be spotted from the shore. Park yourself on the shore and watch for a while, you will be amazed. Cortez island is beautiful and enchanting and once you have visited, you will come back time and time again. |
